Professional Certificates (chartered statistician, SAS certified, series 6, etc.)
What are the most useful certificates for analytic professionals, depending on industry and expertise? I know about SAS certified, black belt (six sigma), chartered statistician, and DataShaping Certified. Are there any other certifications worth pursuing? Does Microsoft offer anything (database related)? What about TDWI (BI, datawarehousing, ETL)? How do you become an Actuary, or a Chartered Financial Analyst?

To become an Actuary, you have to take ten separate actuarial tests. Once you complete these, you are designated as an Actuarial Fellow by the Society. I haven't done this, but have a friend who is an actuary and so learned about the process from her.

CAPM and PMP certification from the Project Management Institute seem to be highly desirable for analytical positions especially for job candidates with a technical background but without formal (University) project management training. PMI certification demonstrates commitment to best practices, processes, organizational, and documentation skills. Certification is by no means a requirement however, demonstrating an interest/commitment to learning project management best practices through continued education (conferences, seminars, etc) and participating in group forums (such as this one) will help separate the "coders" from the true analytic professionals.
