Sure, and because of a coincidence, I just discovered a neat conceptual thread for this. The theory of birthday problem can be cast into a form suitable for counting populations, the so-called Schnabel census of population biology. That has been generalized to more modern, convenient techniques, despite the idea being tried by Laplace. Other population counting techniques include German tank problems and their generalization to techniques of maximum spacing estimation. Enough?

I am not familiar of this type of analysis; care to provide a reference here?

Anyone looked at applying capture-recapture analysis to the problem of estimating Web populations? Hypergeometric models and all that?

just realize that my earlier comments sound a little too harsh for Barry. What I really meant to say is that I do not figure the report template he draw in the blog will actually provide the answer to the problem - although some commentators seem think so.

Barry Parshall from webtrends blog a few weeks ago talked about the right and wrong approaches to attribution analytics. It worth to read, the original post together with the comments -- although I do not see what Barry wrote will lead us anywhere closer to the answer :(

Great idea for a group here...I worked on this a bit while at Walmart.com in the Online Media program last year.

Thanks for the link!
there is another article touched on the "3rd generation" attribution analytics First, Last and Equal Attribution - 3 Wrongs Don’t Make It Righ and of course some of mine on micro and macro attribution, the three generations of attribution analytics etc..

I remember seeing one other "3rd gen" related article, but can't remember where to find it now :(
