One of the questions almost everyone seems to ask me is, “How compatible is WPS with the SAS language?” That’s a good question to ask because anyone who is looking at swapping out SAS for WPS is needs to perform due diligence when evaluating alternative software.

Recently, as part of a review of the SAS language and its compatibility, a potential client wanted to know if WPS could run the University of California San Diego’s CDPS SAS programs. CDPS stands for the Chronic Illness and Disability Payment System which is used as part of the Medicare Payment Processing System used by states and other third parties. We contacted the UCSD CDSP folks for a copy of the SAS programs and ran these programs through the WPS code analyzer.

The SAS source provided to us runs without flaws. There are no anomalies or unsupported PROCS, Functions, language elements or macro language issues. It is 100% compatible with the SAS language.

So other than demonstrating how compatible WPS is in handling the SAS language, why is this important? Because there are a number of organizations both private and/or non-profit that provide processing services and research to states and the federal government on claims processing.

WPS excels at such processing and if your organization is looking to control cost in these tough economic times, WPS needs to be evaluated for your processing needs.

By the way, where can you get a copy of WPS? How much does it cost? Which company created WPS?

600 dollars for a desktop license and you can download it straight from the web http://teamwpc.co.uk/tryorbuy/evaluate

while information on the company is here http://teamwpc.co.uk/about details on founders continue to be sketchy ( and even shady) maybe due to threat of legal action from the bigger players. definitely they seem to be helped by some ex SAS alumni.

The Past

Formed in 2000, the Company first began offering a product called ORA, a web-based reporting, data distribution and business intelligence system. ORA proved successful in fulfilling its end-user requirements, but there was frequently a need for manipulation and pre-processing of data before being published by ORA.

In 2002 the Company decided to develop a product to meet the pre-processing requirements of ORA. Recognising that many clients were already familiar with the language of SAS, the development of WPS was started to provide similar capabilities.

Although originally conceived to meet the needs of the ORA data pre-processing requirements, customers started to ask for WPS to be provided as a stand-alone product. By the end of 2003, WPS for Windows was launched.

During 2003 and 2004 the Company worked with selected customers to develop and test the WPS product line and by mid 2004 a z/OS Mainframe version of WPS was released.

In 2007, the Company was the first provider to release a SAS execution environment on the Windows Vista platform.
The Present

WPS is currently in production at z/OS Mainframe sites around the world and the Windows version of WPS has many hundreds of users, both workstation and server.

The use of WPS on UNIX platforms is steadily growing in popularity since the launch of the beta program in October 2008.

WPS customers include government agencies, public and private companies, individual users, consultants and students.

The Future

The Company will continue to maintain, enhance and expand its core product, WPS.

World Programming is committed to expanding the language support available in WPS and is actively developing new WPS-based products and solutions for the worldwide SAS market.

Hi,

I will start trying WPS in a few days (on existing SAS codes). I hope it will work fine without too much changes to do. I will give some feedback asap.

Regards.
Sandro.
