An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:To make the most of analytics...In-database/in-warehouse analytics will become more and more important and the analytical processing of streaming data likewise. However, the way data is stored in warehouses will have to change, too, not just the way analytics are done. Too many warehouses and marts today store summary data, rollups or data where the crucial time dimension is obscured. No…See More

I am often told to delay data profiling until business requirements are documented and subject matter experts are available to answer my questions. An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:Say cheeseNews reaches us from Italy that there is a solution to this problem. Rather than subjecting each and every customer to the risk rating process, Credito Emiliano, a regional bank in Northern Italy, simply accepts a fairly durable commodity as collateral: parmesan cheese. According to Bloomberg, Credito Emiliano keeps cheese worth about 132 million Euros in its climate-controlled…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:And the customer is...A critical first step for your company is to develop your definition of a customer. Don't underestimate either the importance or the difficulty of this process. And don't assume it is simply a matter of semantics. Some of my consulting clients have indignantly told me: “We don't need to define it, everyone in our company knows exactly what a customer is.” I usually…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:This or that?By and large, I think marketers and market researchers underestimate the fundamental role of comparison and contrast in the way we make judgments about products. As Professor Tripsas makes clear, humans (consumers included) rely on categorization to understand the world. Looking at a new, discontinuous product, we’re likely to ask, is it this or that?—David Bakken:…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:The need for cultural transparencySo if CEOs are starting to embrace social concepts for their businesses, then that means the leadership model is starting to change in these organizations... or at least it's starting to get very stressed. At the core of this change, though, is the concept of transparency. The software that enables social business has inherent transparency built in, but…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:Who’s with you on this?Executive sponsors are the people with enough position and authority to put some weight behind the decision to change. If the executive sponsors do NOT support the change or are on the fence about the change, you have more work to do. Be mindful of their emotions, beliefs, and behaviors and ask yourself if they really understand the need for change and understand…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:They just don’t get itUsually very few other Senior Managers / C-level Executives appreciate the value of good data. Intellectually, most usually agree with me, but when priorities are being set, data quality almost invariably gets pushed down the priority list by more 'burning' issues. Issues where managers see a more immediate impact on the bottom line.—Steve Bennett:…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:Prediction + understandingIn my view, predictive models can be powerful business tools, but they have the potential to lead us into a false belief that because we can predict something on the basis of mathematical relationships, we understand what we’re predicting. We might also lapse into an expectation that “prediction” based on past behavior is in fact destiny. We need to remind…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:It happensOne of the most common obstacles organizations face with data quality initiatives is that many initial attempts end in failure. Some fail because of lofty expectations, unmanaged scope creep, and the unrealistic perspective that data quality problems can be permanently “fixed” by a one-time project as opposed to needing a sustained program. However, regardless of the reason for…See More

Less is moreWe live in an era of plenty. As marketers, we need to help our companies focus and prioritize on the things that matter most to our customers. Since marketing is responsible for the “voice of the customer,” we must help steer R&D, product management, finance, operations and other corporate functions towards adding (or subtracting) features/functionality from our products and services that will actually make a competitive difference. Sometimes, less is more—especially when it…See More

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:Data, data, every whereYou must admit you have a problem before you can solve it. Many enterprises are blind to their integration silos. All they see is their investments in ERP, DW, BI, CPM, MDM, CDI, SOA and PIM applications and the resulting databases with terabytes of data stored in them. I have a company looking for an Analyst/Director. They don't care what type of company you are working for. They are looking for some from a good school with either an Economics, Statistics or Nuclear Physics Degree. They haven't done any AB testing . They need someone to start everything from conception through to the final testing and grow a group. The company is profitable and growing. The founders of Netflix are running things over there.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I am always happy to pay a referral fee.
