Greg Glockner replied to Vincent Granville's discussion Forecast map of radioactive clouds show threat to U.S. west coast in the group Operations Research
"As I read the article, this is a model of the dispersion of a cloud, but unless I missed something, it doesn't account for the half-life of the radioactive particles. Thus, if many of the radioactive particles have a short half-life (which is…"

Greg Glockner replied to Vincent Granville's discussion Optimizing plane boarding: a simple solution. in the group Operations Research
"Menkes van den Briel has done some good research on this topic; if I recall correctly, he has developed a few heuristics that are similar to the window first, middle second, aisle third. See…"

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"AMPL and GAMS have been around much longer than OPL; I believe there is a larger user base for AMPL and GAMS. It would be unprofessional for me to say anything more in a public forum like this."

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"One more thought on benchmarks: to get an apples-to-apples comparison, make sure you compare performance with default settings and performance with tuned parameters. The major solvers let you set parameters to improve the performance; a few changes…"

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"I have no first-hand experience with Xpress, so I'm not qualified to comment on it. However, it's interesting to note that they no longer participate in the public benchmarks by Prof. Hans Mittelmann."

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"I can't get into details, but I can say that Gurobi was designed to be streamlined and efficient. Both the simplex and the MIP solvers are designed to be as fast as possible."

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"We're pleased with the public benchmarks, but they should be "taken with a grain of salt". The benchmark that matters most is how well does a solver work on the models that you want to solve, as opposed to a standard academic test…"

Greg Glockner replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion Which optimization solver to choose? in the group Operations Research
"Hi Yi-Chun! The best option is to look at the alternatives yourself. Figure out which option gives you the right combination of speed, features, price and service. The vendors offer various evaluation copies and benchmarking services that can help…"
