Matt Coates replied to Yi-Chun Tsai's discussion credit score model
"I agree with Mike L that the choice of model type is less important than the quality of data, but to answer your question, there is a huge number of alternatives available, including discriminant analysis, C&RT, CHAID, Boosted Trees, Support…"

Matt Coates replied to Arun's discussion Discriminant Analysis on Categorical Variables
"Arun There may be some confusion over terminology here. First, for the sake of clarity, I should mention that I will use the term, "predictor" to indicate those (continuous or categorical) variables that are being used to make…"

Matt Coates replied to DataLLigence's discussion Test for Difference in Proportions - T Test? Proc GLM?
"It is certainly true that a blind application and reliance on statistical methods without a good understanding of how to interpret the results can be dangerous - but this is not a failing of the methods. In my experience it is much more common for…"

Matt Coates replied to DataLLigence's discussion Test for Difference in Proportions - T Test? Proc GLM?
""Statistically significant" simply means that the difference you have seen is unlikely to have occurred purely by chance and is therefore likely to be a "real" effect. If the result is not statistically significant then, however…"

Matt Coates replied to DataLLigence's discussion Test for Difference in Proportions - T Test? Proc GLM?
"Student's t test is so widely used for the simple reason that it is the only test that many people know. This does not mean that it is appropriate in all these cases and we should be encouraging the use of more appropriate methods wherever…"

Matt Coates replied to Gaetan Lion's discussion Kolmogorov-Smirnov test vs Mann Whitney test for unpaired hypothesis testing?
"You may find this text from the STATISTICA Electronic Manual helpful: Mann-Whitney U Test The Mann-Whitney U test assumes that the variable under consideration was measured on at least an ordinal (rank order) scale. The interpretation of the test…"
