On-Demand Supercomputing

Except for the folks at Cray, most people are unaware of the unique requirements that set apart supercomputing infrastructure from cloud computing infrastructure. In its simplest form the difference is between latency and capacity. For business intelligence applications such as optimization and logistics many servers are required to solve a single problem, and low latency communication between the servers is instrumental for performance. The intuition behind this is easy to understand: a modern…See More

Theodore Omtzigt commented on Vincent Granville's blog post Debunking lack of analytic talent
"There clearly is a big difference by companies and industries that use analytics on the front-end of the business process versus the back-end. The front-end is intimately connected to the sales and marketing  processes and for web-based…"

Profile Information

Short Bio:
My expertise and interests are centered on using computing to solve difficult problems in big data/deep analytics. Either real-time problems in on-line decision making processes where the time constraint creates the need for high performance computing, or big data problems where the size constraint creates the need for advanced computational techniques.

I am interested in connecting with product developers that are working in the field of intelligent applications for Web 2.0. The company I started, Stillwater Supercomputing, Inc. has developed a new environment for the analytics community that makes the computer an integral part of creativity and innovation by offloading the tedious experimental setup and management so that the innovation worker can focus on fun and creative new ideas.

Trillion Triple Semantic Database

The Semantic Web is an idea of World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee where the web captures the semantics, or meaning, of data, and where machines are enabled to interact with that meta data. Berners-Lee observes that although search engines index much of the Web's content, keywords only provide an indirect association of the meaning that human actors are seeking. He foresees a number of ways in which developers and authors, singly or in collaborations, can use self-descriptions and other…

Government as a Platform

I saw a tweet fly by from Tim O'Reilly with the above label. When googling the matter, I came across a presentation Tim gave this summer exploring the new universe of APIs that enable access to governmental data. Combining this data with operational pieces in a typical CRM or ERP database would constitute a powerful means for ERP optimization.

Here is the presentation:…

Ten clean tech predictions for 2010

Nick Parker, Executive Chairman of the Cleantech Group offers ten trends in clean teach for 2010:

Here are the group's predictions for 2010:

1. Private capital growth recovers, record fund year. Global cleantech venture capital flows receded to around 2007 level but in the U.S., cleantech pulled ahead as the largest single venture investment theme in 2Q09 and 3Q09.

2. Clean economies become the new space race. There will be changes in which countries and cities… Continue

Large Hadron Collider is gearing up for new physics

And now something completely different: brain simulation

Our good folks at the national labs have been developing cloud computing for two decades, so what they are doing now is possibly an indication of what we'll be doing with the cloud a decade from now. Researchers at IBM Almaden have been working on the largest brain simulation to date; 1.6 billion neurons with 9 trillion connections. The scale of this endeavor still dwarfs the capacity and capability… Continue

I have a company looking for an Analyst/Director. They don't care what company you are working for. They are looking for some from a good school with either an Economics, Statistics or Nuclear Physics Degree. They haven't done any AB testing . They need someone to start everything from conception through to the final testing and grow a group. The company is profitable and growing. The founders of Netflix are running things over there.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I am always happy to pay a referral fee.

Theo, Alteryx is able to directly interact using ODBC or OLE-DB with most data repositories and supports every standard input and output file type, so "mining" data from any source on the network is immediate and very fast. You can geocode a file of addresses, filter these by some geography or polygon you build with a drive-time calculation, and identify just the households that match a segmentation profile or demographic set. This all happens at real-time speeds and blows away conventional SQL and SHP processing. I'm trying to load a video of AT&T Mobility customer explaining how Alteryx is able to do what they have not been able to do using other tools. I'll let you know when its uploaded. Wayne

Sorry to miss this request until now. It appears I posted sample report output from our Alteryx product. If you are not familiar with our technology, you can read more about Alteryx at our Web site, extendthereach.com, under the Products menu. Alteryx is a spatial mapping and visualization environment within which corporate decision makers can access other databases, spatial data and objects, and a wealth of data sources we provide in order to answer questions and gain insight from what we have coined, geographic business intelligence(TM). Thanks for the inquiry, and I promise to keep a closer eye on AnalyticBridge activity. Regards, Wayne Moore

Theodore; I would be interested to hear your comments on the Color by Numbers discussion which I posted on my website yesterday. I like discussing the challenges of attemptng to meet client demand for reports using imperfect data. Indexing is one way to address this situation.
