The LHC is making news this morning by setting a record of particle acceleration long held by Fermilab in Chicago.
This article marks the actual news bulletin issued by CERN, but
this article is more fun since it shows you some of the sensory evidence.
I thought it interesting to compare what an equivalent…

Our good folks at the national labs have been developing cloud computing for two decades, so what they are doing now is possibly an indication of what we'll be doing with the cloud a decade from now. Researchers at IBM Almaden have been working on the
largest brain simulation to date; 1.6 billion neurons with 9 trillion connections. The scale of this endeavor still dwarfs the capacity and capability…

An occasional series in which a review of recent posts on SmartData Collective reveals the following nuggets:
Say cheese
News reaches us from Italy that there is a solution to this problem. Rather than subjecting each and every customer to the risk rating process, Credito Emiliano, a regional bank in Northern Italy, simply accepts a fairly durable commodity as collateral: parmesan cheese. According to Bloomberg, Credito Emiliano keeps cheese worth about 132 million Euros…

According to several traffic measurement companies (Quantcast, etc.), Twitter's traffic is exploding, followed by LinkedIn, Facebook and other networks. Once you factor in and remove spammers, growth numbers look much more modest.
From our experience, we see very strong growth on Twitter, but after removing spammers, the growth is close to 0. LinkedIn shows a strong growth too, smaller than Twitter, but after removing spammers, LinkedIn growth appears much stronger than…

Twitter is a PR / Word-Of-Mouth Advertising type of company, when it comes to how they could make money.
One thing that they must have been thinking about for a long time is this very simple concept: sell paid tweets on Twitter. This might be the holy grail for Twitter. How would this work? Each paid tweet would show up with a little logo, so that the user knows it's paid content. Paid tweets would be created by advertisers on their Twitter or Feed Burner account, and would then be…

Why did Twitter receive so much VC funding (more than $100 million), yet they barely make any money.
I believe that Twitter could be the new Google and the new source of information, in 5 to 10 years. Twitter could become the largest repository of news and content. The feature introduced this month - list management - is…

Problem :
A big FMCG company sells "paper napkins" of various sizes and pack size ( say pack of 10 or a pack of 20) through retail outlets in eastern India/ western India/ southern India / northern India. Paper napkin of a particular size and pack size form a distinct item and is labeled with a Universal Product Code (UPC). Hedging is vital for corporate risk management, involving reducing the exposure of the company to particular risks. Hedge effectiveness testing permits firms to assess if they match the timing of the gains and losses of hedged items and their hedging derivatives. In…

The easiest part of the interview process is the Thank You letter. Yet it has once again been the kiss of death for one of our job candidates. This is the second time in 3 months that one of our job candidates has been burned because of spelling errors on a Thank You letter. With the job market being as bad as it is, you would think that job candidates would go the extra mile and make sure that they are doing everything that they can to cover their bases.
