Venkatesh, this is a great article, and it does demonstrate the value of using data normalization to present (and disguise) data results for interpretation reasons. And, I can provide another application for which data normalization is great: when evaluating the impact of some event on a group versus a larger population - even in the absence of a true control group. Even without a control group, it is possible to evaluate the impact of a certain event, say, hot weather, on the energy usage habits of a subset of households - RELATIVE - to the entire population of an area.
