The most active of these Internet communities seem (in my biased opinion) to be AnalyticBridge, maybe because I spend a decent amount of time keeping it "alive" and bringing in new members all the time.

The Stillwater Computational Science and Engineering network mentioned above is focuses less on supercomputing and more on the trials and tribulations of computational science and engineering. That large scale cluster computing factors into this is just a side effect.
The network was mostly set up as a mechanism to connect students in the computational science to practisioners in the field. Computational science is truly a global activity and the rapid cost reductions of compute power makes India and China truly impressive competitors. Each individually produces more scientists and engineers per year than US and EU combined and with global IP structures three guys in a garage in Pune can build a patent portfolio that will block GE from building its next generation jet-engine.
The folks in the chemical world have recognized this first and have setup a marketplace for scientific talent in Innocentive (http://www.innocentive.com). I expect that an engineering version is not far behind.

For those in Australia, there is a linkedin group called Data Analytics Australia. Note that membership is strictly policed.
